The chairman moved as an amendment of a resolution carried at a special meeting, approving of the board's engineer's reading scheme, that the board approve and accept the scheme as prepared by the engineer, subject to amendments and alterations as may be desired. Mr. Clark seconded the amendment. Mr. Clay considered that confusion would result if the amendment was carried. It would give the incoming board unlimited powers to do as it liked. The scheme, as submitted to the rate-j payers should be adhered to. The amend- i ment was withdrawn.

The question of having Mannkau Road watered by the Tramways Company's sprinkler was discussed in connection with a letter from the city engineer on the subject, which stated that, while the council was prepared to supply water for the purpose at 6d per 1000 gallons, the contract between the Tramways Company and the Epsom and One-tree Hill Road Boards would expire next month. The matter was left in the chairman's hands. On the motion of the chairman, it was decided to make application to the Government Life Insurance Department for a loan of £3500 to provide a water supply for those houses in the district which had not been connected with j the Manukau Water Board's supply
