PONSONBY LITERARY SOCIETY

The final meeting of the season of the Ponsonby Literary and Debating Society was held on Monday evening in the Leys Institute, when the president, Mr. W. McMath, occupied the chair. The prizes donated by the patron, Mr. T. W. Leys, were presented to the winners of the competitions held during the year. Mr. E. Smith gained the prize for the best prepared speech, and Mr. R. E. Dowle and Mr. C. S. Lees the prizes for the best essays. It was decided that the society should organise an entertainment of some kind, the proceeds to go towards the Wounded Soldiers' Fund, and a committee was elected to arrange matters. The even ing was then devoted to a debate on Competition v. Co-operation, the affirmative being taken by Mr. C. S. Lees and the negative by Mr. W. McMath.
