UNEMPLOYMENT DECREASING.
DEPARTMENT'S REPORT. [by telegraph.—special CORRESPONDENT.) a Wellington. Wednesday. Local reports by the Labour Department show that the position of unemployment is steadily improving with the advance of spring. During the week ended September 18, there were 93 applicants for work in Wellington, 83 being placed in Government and 34 in private work. Of the 10 remaining on the register, six have merely recorded their names for harvest work when the season opens. The Department has vacancies for men used to heavy manual labour at Roti and Raetihi railway works. In Auckland there were 73 applications, and positions were found for 24 —19 in Government and five in private employment. On public works in the district there are vacancies for 30 unskilled labourers.
