ROYAL N.Z. YACHT SQUADRON. The annual report of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, which will be presented at the annual meeting on September 30. states that ,43 members of the squadron joined the military forces of the Empire in the present war, and fire laid down their lives. It also referred to the loss of a member and trustee', the late Mr. J. C. Mac Icy, in the Lusitama disaster. While realising the gravity of the war, the report continues, the committee decided that it was the proper and wiser course to carry out its usual racing programme. The yacht racing events brought forward good fields and the racing was of a high order, competition, as usual, being very keen. The Question of new club rooms had engaged the attention of the committee. and is still under consideration. The committee wish to thank the commodore and Messrs. 0- E. Hortou and A. Burt, jun.. for their generous offers of financial support in this connection. The squadron commenced the year with a membership of 230 town, 62 country, 23 absentee, and 13 honorary and life members. New members were elected as follows:—24 town and 4 country, and 2 hon. life members. The total membership with which the squadron will commence the coming season is 200 town, 68 country, 59 absentee, and 15 honorary and life members. The committee desired to thank the commodore, vicc-cotnmodore, and Messrs. E. H. Davis and J. C. Hardy for the handsome trophies, presented by them, and competed for during the past season. Tho commodore's, trophy was won by the yacht Kotiri, the vice-commodore's trophy by the lorangi* Mr. E. H. Davis's trophy by the Kotiri. and Mr. J. C. Hardy trophy by the lorangi. _ The balance-sheet showed receipts totalling 4612 17s Id, leaving a credit balance of £68 17 » la. for .the year. Tho statement of assets and liabilities showed a credit balance of £492 13s lOd

CUP DEFENDERS RACE. The Astor Cups -row. according to the Piew York Herald, sailed for on August 6- over the historic course off tho Bretons Reef light 'vessel. The conditions were nearly ideal, for the -wind was of an average velocity of 22 knots. Captain Vincent Astor nad presented three cups for competition ♦he principal being for the America, Cup defence candidates. In this race the Resolute and Vanitie took part, and the former won on time allowance. The Vanities actual time for the 37i-mil6 course was less than the Resolute'a by 28 seconds, I ana as the Resolute received lin 36s allowance she won on corrected times by lm Bs. the Resolute crossed the starting-line 13s ?i l . cr -,™ 1 \ anitie. The wind was from north by west, and the course selected was from the starting-line 17 miles east-south-east-, thence north 4i miles, thenoe west 3J miles and north 16 miles to finishing line Resolute led by SOe after the run to the first turn, but on the weather leg V anitie not only picked up the 30s, L i 12s 4, an ' l eventually finished 28s ahead of the Resolute. NOTES AND COMMENTS. The Auckland yacht Viola, built in Auckland in 1904. has been purchased by Mr Duncan, of Wellington. In the 1913-14 season aha started in 11 races, and won six first prizes, three second prizes, and two thud prizes, besides two aggregate cups Her length over-all is 32ft. length on the waterhue 24ft, her beam Bft. and draught So far 43 members of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron have joined the Imperial.
