ENGINEERS WANTED.

COMPANY OF TUNNELLERS. CAMP AT AUCKLAND. [BY TELEGRAPH- SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington. Friday. The Minister for Defence stated in the House of Representatives this afternoon that the Government had asked the British Army Council to call upon New Zealand for any service that the Dominion could reasonably supply. Following upon this the Imperial Government had requested the New Zealand Government to raise an engineer tunnelling companv of 300 to 400 men, the personnel to be of experienced facemen and some less skilled assistants. ;

It was proposed, continued the Minister, to obtain the company from the miners of the country and from men experienced in tunnelling work in connection with the Public Works Department. Only a limited number of coal miners could be accepted, as it was of importance that nothing should be done to limit the production ol coal. The men would probably be trained for a month in a camp it was proposed to establish in or near Auckland. Mftnbers: " Hear, hear." " Where is Auckland?" "A sop to Cerberus!" The ages of the men, continued Mr. Allen, would be between 21 and 40 years, and the men were being invited to register without delay at the local Defence offices in the usual way.
