ALLIES AT CONSTANTINOPLE THIS MONTH.

EXPECTATION OF A FRENCH OFFICER.

TURKISH FOOD SUPPLIES NOW PRECARIOUS.

(Received September 17. 10.30 p.m.)

Athens, September 16. A French officer who has been invalided from the Dardanelles

to Salonika states that the allies are progressing. The Turkish losses are enormous. He is confident that Constantinople will be taken before the end of September. A corporal who deserted from the Turkish army has reached •Mitylenc He reports that the Turks are suffering from hunger as the result of the activity of British submarines in the Sea of Marmora. All traffic has ceased owing to the number of transports torpedoed. The Turks are obliged to obtain supplies overland, and there are great difficulties owing to the bad roads, the lack of transport, and the naval bombardment from the Gulf of Saros. The Turkish attacks have grown much weaker owing to the lack of ammunition. The troops are greatly depressed and the officejs openly complain of Germany's neglect to support Turkey. Hundreds of Turkish soldiers have deserted and formed bards of brigands, which are terrorising the villayet of Brusa, in Asia Minor. Regulars sent to disperse them joined the brigands.
