NORTH SHORE TELEPHONE CABLE. [BY TELEGRAPH.— CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Friday. The Postmaster-General was asked by Mr. Harris (Waitemata) to-night, when the new telephone cable between Devonport and Auckland would be laid. Sir Joseph Ward said that the matter was under consideration. There -were greater difficulties connected with the project than were readily understood.

PRUTS INSIGNIS TIMBER. Some little time ago, on behalf of a Waikato firm which is engaged in cutting for timber the well-known pinnai. insignia trees, Mr. J. A. Young, MP., made inquiries as to whether the Advances to Workers and Settlers' Department wouid permit the timber to be used as scantling and studs in bnildiwre erected under its supervision. The Department has informed Mr. Young that an expert opinion has been obtained, and Chat the timber is not recommended for use in any building other than temporary ones.

CIVIL SERVICE APPOINTMENT. The Prim© Minister., according to a notice of a question given by Mr. Wittv (Riccarton), is to be asked* whether he wrote to the Public Service Commissioner stating that he preferred a surveyor to fill the vacant office of Under-Secretary for Lards, and if so whether this was done with a view to influencing the board against the application of Mr. F. T. O'Neill, Assistant) Under-Secretary for Lands, for the vacant office.
