TRAMS TO MT. ALBERT.

POPULAR STOPPING-PLACE. REDUCED FARES ASKED FOR.

Several suggestions in connection with the tramway extension to Mount Albert were laid before the Mount Albert' Borough Council by a deputation of ratepayers last night. The principal one raised was that of stopping places.

The chief spokesman for the deputation, Mr. J. C. Entriciin, said he understood that the Tramways Company had deleted Alexandra Avenue from the list of stopping places which the council desired tne company to adopt. The deputation orequested that the council should use its influence to induce the company to reconsider its decision, as the general feeling amongst residents was that Alexandra Avenue was the best place for a stop. The deputation would also like the council to ask the Tramways Company to grant concession tickets to Mount Albert residents.

The Mayor said the City Council had absolutely refused to allow throughfare" cars to run through the city. The stops which the company had been asked to fix on the extension were St. Luke's Road, the foot of Mountain Road, Albert Avenue, Alexandra Avenue, and Mary's Lane. However, after an inspection of the lme, and at the suggestion of the traffic manager, the company altered the Alexandra Avenue stop to a spot between Alexandra Avenue and Albert Avenue. This did not appear to the speaker to be at all suitable, but the general manager of the Tramways Company had asked that the ma'tter be allowed to stand over for a while, as i would adjust itself. In the speaker's opinion, the stop should be at Alexandra Avenue. The stopping places would have to be approved by the council, and the public could rest assured that their interests would be conserved. The general manager of the Tramways Company had informed him that there was no possibility of obtaining a reduction in fares. It was unfortunate that owing to a flaw having been discovered in the Act, the trams were nob yet running to Mount Albert but he hoped that by Wednesday week the cifficulty would have been overcome. At a later stage of the meeting l , the Mayor proposed, and it was decided, that the council wojld agree to no other stops on the extension but Salisbury Road. St. Luke's Road. Mountain Road. Albert venue, Alexandra Avenue, and Lloyd Avenue. 14 w< l -, a , lso decided that the whole council should wait upon the general man- | ager of the Tramways Company and urge that some reduction in fares should be granted to Mount Albert residents. « Mr. H. T. Markwick suggested that <■ the company should be asked to run a 1 bi's service along Edendale Road. 1 The Mayor: We can mention it, but I < do nob wish to see the roads cut up by | 4 busses. I would advocate a tramwav. * t v " c
