ITALIAN CRUISER SUNK.
SUBMARINED IN ADRIATIC ROUMANIA HEARING WAR. THE ADVANCE ON GALLIPOLI HOPEFUL OUTLOOK IN WALES. The Italian cruiser Giuseppe Garibaldi (7294 tons) has been sunk by an Austrian submarine in the Adriatic. The warship was attacked after operating off Cattaro, where the Austrian fleet is sheltering. Most of the crew are reported to have been saved. Italian naval activity in the Adriatic has been marked during the past fortnight. Important shipbuilding works at Trieste have been bombarded, extensive fires being caused. On land the Italians are attacking vigorously along the Tsonzo front. Several lines of Austrian armoured trenches were captured on Sunday, and 2000 prisoners were taken. There is little to-day from either the eastern or western theatres. The Austrians report that the battle between the Vistula and the Bug, in the south of Poland, is in full progress, the Russians fighting with great stubbornness. A Paris communique states that German attacks west and southwest of Souchez were repulsed. The Germans bombarded two points on the Flanders front. The Austro-Hungarian rulers have been considering whether to send Roumania an ultimatum or a declaration of war. The Premier of Bulgaria says the Bulgarian Army is ready, but Bulgaria must have Macedonia to induce her to enter the war. Mr. Ashmead Bartlett, in his latest despatch from Gallipoli, describes Jhe advance of the allies in Gully Ravine, in the south of the peninsula. The outlook in South Wales is more hopeful. ' Mr. Lloyd George, Mr. Walter Runciman, President of the Board of Trade, and Mr. Arthur Henderson, the Labour representative in the Cabinet, are conferring with the miners' leaders, at Newport.
