HEAVY RAINFALL.
The rainfall in Auckland for the 24 hours ending at midnight, as recorded by the Herald guage, was 1.49 in. Rain fell heavily yesterday morning but in Uie afternoon the sky cleared. The rainfall for the 24 hours ending at 9.30 a.m. yesterday, according to the gauge in Albert Park, was the heaviest recorded in the city for five years. The total fall during the 24 hours was 2.46 in, three points more than the fall registered on April 2 last. Owing to the fact that yesterday's rain fell steadily, the city drainage system—which is designed to carry off lin of storm water per hour —was able to cope with the water, and no damage was done as was the case on Good Friday, when 2in out of a total of 2.43 in fell in the space of about two and a-half hours. The last occasion on which the rainfall for 24 hours exceeded 2.46 in was in March, 1910, when 3.85 in were registered. The heaviest fall during any period of 24 hours in the past twenty years is 4.02 in, which amount fell on February 22, 1891. The heaviest 24 hours' rainfall ever recorded in Auckland fell on February 11, 1869, when the phenomenal fall ol 6.39 m was reeoided. The average rainfall for the month of July is 4.95 in. The total fall for the month to date has been 2.78 in.
