THE UNEMPLOYED.
APPLICANTS FOR WORK. A total of 223 applicants were received by the women's branch of the Department of Labour in Auckland during June, this number comprising 130 applications by employers and 93 by women desiring employment. In her report for the month the officer in charge, Miss H. E. Morrison, states that engagements have been made for 48 single women and four married women. There has been an increase in the number of applications by widows with children dependent upon them, married women with delicate husbands and children, by others whose husbands are out of work, and women "tip in years" not qualified for the pension. Miss Morrison remarks that it is difficult to find work, such as sewing, laundry work, or house-cleaning by the day, for these people. There is plenty of work in private homes for general servants, hslps, etc., but hotel and boardinghouse work is still slack. Factory managers are inquiring for and engaging more hands. During the week ending July 3, a total of 42 married men and 74 singe men applied to the Department for work, and private employment was found for 11 of this number. In the previous week, ten applicants out of 51 married men and 70 single men were successful in securing employment.
