CAVALRY MEN IN TRENCHES
SIB J. BENCH'S PRAISE.
SPEECH AT INSPECTION.
ENTHUSIASTIC TROOPS.
London, June 20.
When Sir John French yesterday inspected the Third Cavalry Division he thanked the men for, their wonderful performance in the trenches at Ypres. He described the gas attacks as dastardly. The gas came as a bolt from the blue. Many troops dropped dead on the spot. It was ire possible to see anything, and the darkness was rendered more opaque by the asphyxiating fumes. A certain amount of confusion was unavoidable, but the troops recovered with superb quickness and filled the gap to face a wall of gas miles long and yards high. They could not be too highly praised.
Sir John French especially thanked the Third Dragoons for their work at Chateau Hooge. As Sir John French was* leaving the men broke ranks and cheered and waved their caps. It was an impressive picture, with the Fieldmarshal in the middle of the men, his hand stiffly at the salute, indicative of the perfect trust ' and loyalty existing between troops and commanders.
