FOR AUCKLAND COLLEGE. PROPOSAL BEFORE COUNCIL. The matter of the establishment of- a Chair" of history and ec'on6mics at the Auckland University College wrjs considered .at a meeting of fas College Council yesterday, when the ', report of. I/he committee. appointed to inquire . into, thei , t matter y was presented. There were present at. the , meeting: Mr. Gerald peacocke, in the chair, Mr. T. W. Leys; Professor C. W. Egerton, Dr. W. C. W. McDowell, A Mr. H. J. D. Mahon, , Mr. T. U. Wells,.and Mr'.,J. F, flosking. ,The report. of the committee was to the effect that there Would, be a surplus in the college finances of between £1400 and £1500. of a competent per : , son to. undertake tlie duties, of professor of history and economics could bo obtained for a salary of £700. & year.. _, ; i ,... "As 'the subjects •' of. history and economics are already taught by a lefctuM*. who also teaches mental science and economic geography," proceeded the report, ''the establishment of a, ; chair of economics and history (mid.possibly involve new arrangements;'. for' tike teaching of the • Other two subject as well, and' the appointment of lecturers on thesotwo subjects would probably entail an expenditure of at least £450. This arrangement would thus entail an expenditure, for the salaries of .professor and loctursrs of about £1150 a year, which, deducting £550 saved on the salary of the' present lecturer in history and economics, means a total extra expenditure to the college of £600 a year." ~,..... The committee considered the establishment of a chair of history and economies' is quite feasible and eminently desirable, and recommended that arrangements for the appointment of ' a professor bo considered at the next meeting of the council. The report was adonted after some discussion regarding the .advisability of appointing a new professor during the continuance of tho war. Eventually the matter was held over till next meeting of the council.
