PAIR OF WHITE GLOVES.
—_ «v NO CRIME AT GISBGRNE. [BY lELEGEAPH.-OWX CORRESPONDS.] j Gisborxe, Monday. I On- takin" his seat on the Bench at th* Supreme Court to-day Mr. Justice Cooper was presented by the registrar with a pair of white gloves. His Honor said it was a matter for congratulation that for the first time in 10 years there was no criminal business before the Court, Not only were there no criminal cases, but there were no persons who had pleaded guilty before the magistrate and been sent up for sentence. It was considered by some criminal authorities that when there was prosperity in a district it added considerably to the amount of crime, but that Was not his experience. His experience was that where there was adversity a certain class of crime was more frequently before the Court. His Honor said there was not, so much drinking in this district as thorn was some years ago. The fact that the Empire was involved in a war for her very existence had had a steadying effect! upon men.
