McDowell has bee-i reelected, without opposition, a representative of the Auckland District Court of Convocation on the Senate of the New Zealand University. Matron E. G. Brooke and Sister .f. Willis, of the Army nursing staff. who returned from Samoa by the Atua on Sunday, left for Wellington by the mid day express yesterday. Mr. H. E. Pacoy, managing director of the New Zealand Dairy Association, left for Wellington yesterday. Miss Jenny Niccol, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. ' George Niccol, of Arney Road, Remuera, was married to Mr. Norman Hanna, second son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Hanna, of Whakapirau, Kaipara, at St. Mark's . Church, Remuera, on Thursday. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. W. Beatty, vicar .of St. Mark's. Mr. ■ Norman Hanna is leaving New Zealand shortly, to offer his services 4 to the War Office. An old identity o? Auckland died at Onehunga yesterday in the person of Mrs. Henry Harnington, who was in her ninetyfirst year. The deceased lady, who was born in Devonshire, arrived in New Zealand in 1843 by the ship Blenheim, and settled, with her parents— and Mrs., Smart—in New Plymouth. She was married in 1848, and," subsequently,"came to' Auckland, where she lived for 20 years prior to moving to Onehunga. Mr. Hardington died in 1887. . ; . Lieutenant-Colonel A. Fiugge, officer commanding the Auckland infantry Battalion, who was reported wounded early; in May, is now at Devonport, England. Air. Graves Aickin received the following telegram from the Prime Minister yesterday : _" I have received a cablegram from the High Commissioner stating that Lieu-tenant-Colonel Plugge had been admitted to the military hospital at Devonport, England. I hope he will soon be quite recovered, and be fit for further service." The Rev. A. J. Seamer, superintendent of the St. Kilda "and Peninsula Methodist Circuit, Dunedin, has enlisted for service as a private. Being of opinion. that older men should form a fair proportion of each force sent to the'front, Mr. Seamer en-' deavoured to exchange his *' captainchaplaincv for a commission as a lientenant. 'Technical difficulties arose, and he was informed that a transfer-would mean a delay of at least six months. Not feeling inclined to wait for this term, ho decided to join the colours as a private. Mr. Andrew Spence, military critic on tho staff of the Dnnedin Evening Star, died on Saturday. In 1900 he resigned his position as , a teacher at the Albany Street school, and joined the literary staff of the.Evening Star, leaving then later for-an appointment in Wellington. During his stay in Wellington ho coached territorial officers for military examination. At the outbreak of the present war ho was in Dunedin, and accepted a position on the Evening Star as a writer of military articles. For some time Mr. Spence had been in indifferent health, but he was active up to within two days of his death, which was caused by pleurisy and other pulmonary troubles. He is survived by a widow and two children.
