Bean, writes that one of the most remarkable qualities of the Australian and New Zealand troops was displayed daring the first three days' fighting. Many men were living in trenches a quarter of a mile away from the nearest officer, taking the commands of some corporal or sergeant who rose to the occasion and took control with complete confidence. Many men in the trenches during these critical days never saw an officer. There were not enough to go round, and subordinate commanders did not hesitate to take control, displaying wonderful capacity.
