BATTERIES OF FORTRESS GAIN ASCENDANCY.

Wellington, June 18The High Commissioner sends the following cablegram from London, under data 17th inst.: "At 2 a.m. on Tuesday the enemy began the bombardment of the Russian fortress of Osowiec, North Poland, but the fortress batteries got the upper hand. In the Orkitz Valley during Tuesday night the enemy opened intense artillery fire, using numerous batteries against the village of Jednorojetz, and throwing tens of thousands of shells in a short space of time. On Tuesday the enemy several times tried to attack the position, these efforts ending with the occupation of only part. The enemy completely destroyed the trenches of one of our regiments."
