A fund is being raised to perpetuate the memory of Miss M. Weill Fraser, the Scottish international golfer, who died in Serbia, where she had gone for Red Cross work as a member of the Scottish Women's Hospital. It is proposed that the momorial shall take tho form of the endowment of a bed in the hospital at Kragujevac. where she succumbed to fever. , According to R. E. Howard, in the Sportsman, the opportunities for playing golf at a modest cost continue to ({row. His says they will not be largely utilised until after the war, but they will be needed then, so that their advancement at this stage is reasonable. The Leeds course, one of the latest public courses, which is easily accesi sible by tramcar from all parts of the city, is said to be delightfully situated, and to have most of the natural advantages that go to the making of a good inland green. A hill in the middle of the site has been turned to excellent use; two of the greens have •been cut into it, and its influence is to be exorcised at other holes. So far as one can gather, the patronage of public courses has j been maintained fairly well during the winter; the circumstance of so many men having joined the army has naturally caused a certain faliing-off in the attendances, but dorks, warehousemen, and others who were too old or otherwise unable to go to the war, and whose working hours have not been increased have continued to play some golf- I was told the other day that tho famous Braid Kills course at Edinburgh had received far larger support than most people expected. And we know that Edinburgh has responded splendidly to the coil to arms. The question of woman's ability to play golf well, a New York correspondent writes, is iv much-discussed one on this side of the water and fruitful of endless discussions among enthusiasts who claim a great advancement has been made by women as well us men in America. The American woman golfer who can combine the driving ability of Miss Lillian B. Hyde, considered by mnnj to be the longest woman driver in the wo.v'.i, the crispness of irons of Miss Marion Hollins, the reliable putting of the present champion—Mrs. H. Arnold Jackson, of Boaton—and tho consistent playing of Mrs. P..' H. Barlow, of Philadelphia, will be the woman champion of the world- A few years has dono much for the game of golf in this country- Once a society fad, it has become a national pastime, It ,is no longer the game of the few iu America. On the public links of the park everybody can play it, and tho public courses of Van Cortlandt ana other ' s-rks around New York are crowded during tK 5 season. There are fewer ' golfwidows" now, however, for women have become fascinated with the game and are among the best type of players. Hundreds are entered every, year for thn women » national golf championship. It is estimated that there are . 112 golf courses wii/iin a ruSius of 50 miles of New York, and. that 30 COO moil and women within this territory play golf. Women's progress t.*» game has been interesting to note, a: <, it is now generally admitted that their work on the finks compares favourably with the men s. At the men's national amateur championship at the Ekwanok Country Club Miss Hyde made longer drives than three-fourths of the men who competed for the championship.
