HOCKEY.

CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITIONS.

WINS FOR UNIVERSITY AND AUCKLAND. The hockey championships V'ere advanced a further stage on Saturday afternoon in favourable conditions. In the senior grade principal interest was centred in the meeting of the leading teams, University and Aieta, on No. 1 ground. The match provided a good exhibition of the game, the pace being last throughout, while the fortunes of the teams fluctuated periodically, and interest was maintained right up to the call of time, when the blues held the advantage by the odd goal in three. Up to half-time A ret a. led by a goal, scored by White, to 0, but it was then evident that the blacks would be hard put to maintain the advantage, and so it proved. The University attack was quickly driven home and, notwithstanding the excellent defence by Areta backs, Jacobsen and llowe added points for the blues during the second spell. A feature of the game was the clever play of England, fullback for Areta. In the other senior matches Auckland defeated Mount Eden by 3 go.ils to 2, but the game was most disappointing, and much ••clew , senior standard. All junior grade and ladies' matches were advanced a further round. The results were as follows: — UNIVERSITY V. ARETA. Play opsned briskly with University pressing, and it was evident at the outset that the same would be hotly contested. nalitea for breaches wore frequent at the start, but as the game advanced mistakes ere rectified. The blue forwards were nippy, with Mahoney showing in the van, but the blacks' defines was solid, and presently Are'a's forwards showed up in some passing nns that penned the blues back in their own twenty *ive. Nothing resulted, however, and the situation was relieved from time to time by clever line runs by Jacobsen, for University. The ball travelled from end to end of the field, with Areta bavin? me advantage ir attack. Maginie and Whittaker led the biack lino, and the short passing bouts proved effective, but the strong defence was unbeaten until well on in tho spell, when White drove- the ball into the net. The blues' forwards were next prominent in several dangerous runs. The halfbacks supported well, and several attempts to equalise the score narrowly misled Half-time was called with the score Areta, 1; University,

i Upon restarting, the University forwards earned oat soma smart offensive movements vi hich (hroatened to break through, but good tackling by Stainton, and clever intercepting by England and Ellison checked the onslaughts. Retaliatory rushes by the blacks' line, in which Preston and Moginie stood out, temporarily beat the defence, and a goal as lost by the narrowest margin, bull the blacks attacked, and 'Varsity's custodian saved well, while Robinson, Bongard and Speight defended determinedly. Further attempt! by 'Varsity proved successful ; quick interchange* among the forwards carried the attack rapidly to Areta's circle, where Jacobsen secured and goaled, eaualismg the score- 'Varsity maintained the offensive, smart work by Grics and Jacobßen on the respective wings assisting. Magnificent play by England, who checked attack after attack brilliantly, was chiefly responsible for the score being kept down. From scrambling play just inside the circle Rowe allot hard, and the ball went past several defenders into the net. During the latter stages of the game Areta maintained a hot attack and a score seemed imminent. The defence by the custodian and fullbacks was, however, too sound, and time was called with last years' champions beaten, the score being:

University ,„ .„ o Areta 1 Mr. L. C. Kent was referee. AUCKLAND V. MOUNT EDEN. On the adjoining ground the Auckland and Mount Eden senior elevens played a very disappointing game. Breaches of the rules, especially for "sticks," were far too frequent, while poor position was maintained by the players of both teams, and in several instances play became almost a medley. Auckland, though perhaps lucky to score the firßt goal, played the better hockey and deserved the win. The red and blanks were most prominent throughout the first spell, scoring three goals through the agency of Fryer and Sargent, and several rushes went right through the browns' defence. During the # second half Mount Eden forwards met with more success, notwithstanding the excellent exhibition of goal-keeping by Allen for Auckland. Drawer scored twice, while the reds were unable io again penetrate Mount Eden's defence. Fletcher led many attacks for the losers, but the combination I of the forwards was crude, and the defence was seldom drawn effectively.
