AUCKLAND CLUB. The second .round of the match play handicap is set down for this afternoon. Those still in the competition are reminded that only one week can, be allowed for the completion of each round, so as to enable the firturo card for the season to he adhered toSeveral players on Saturday seemed to bo uncertain as to procedure when in the new bunker at the 15th hole, and also when ! hampered by fences round the new ladies' i tees. The local rule governing these mat- : ters is posted in tho clubhouseI The large entry received for the match | play handicap seems to show ; hat members I of the Auckland Club are much keener j match than medal players. There is no j doubt '.hat local players fail rather badly I at the medal form of play. Tho fact that any little error made early in the round 1 dogs them to the end seems to spoil most ] players, More practice seems to be the only I cure for tLo fault. An all-day medal match, say on Juno 3, would he a good test, and act as ft preliminary to the qualifying rounds for the club championship. The green committee at Middlemore is faced with quite a serious problem in getting at least five of tho greens back to their old condition. The long, dry summer, coming on top of tho heavy work of last j season, played havoc with the finer sorts of grass,. Judging from past experience, awater supply scheme to enable all the greens to be watered in the summer is almost a necessity. The temporary greens in usi are playing quite well, but very few temporary greens can stand a lot of hard wear and tear, and they will probably get poor in a few weeks.
