SPEED CHALLENGE RACES.
TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME. A series of challenge races for 21ft restricted motor-launches, open to any boat in the Dominion, will be inaugurated to-dav under the auspices of the New Zealand Power-boat Association. To-day's trials, winch will be decided on the Waitemata. Harbour, arose from a challenge issued by Mr. W. H. H. Downer, of Christchurch, owner of the speed launch Disturber, to Mr. i 0. J. Callings, of Auckland, owner of Fleet- , wing, holder of the New Zealand Association's speed pennant The Disturber arrived on Sunday in charge oi Mr. Curtis, the builder, and since then has been given daily runs on the harbour. The best two out of three trials over the association's three and a-half knot course will win the ' pennant. The course i-; from the starting 1 line off King's Wharf to the black buoy off ,' Judge's Bay. thence round Sandspit beacon off Devonport to finishing lino between mark boat and King's Wharf The races are . timed to start at '2.30 p.m.. 3.30 p.m., and 4.30 pin The Disturber is painted red and ■ the Fleotwing green. i A challenge shield and guarantee fund has wen subscribed to by the following gentlemen :-;Messrs. The restrictions for the 1 21ft class have not been definitely fixed, but ; the shield will be presented subject to altera.- ! lions being made by a special committee and • suggestions from the various motor-boat j clubs in New Zealand. ] Messrs. Lane Bros, have built a special 21ft racing launch to compete in the han- , dicap race over 10 knots, and have also chalI lenced the Fleetwing for the Now Zealand j Power-boat Association's scced pennant, if she is the holder after competition with the ! Disturber. The now launch is named the ! Rival. I Challenge races for the o'sortition's 7*. ■'.)■ lu>, and 12! knot pennants will be held i to-day. and in addition a general handicap J for launches oyer 10 knots. In all races, exi cept the general handicap race, five minutes j before the race the competitors' numbers will Ibe shown. Threo minutes before each race i three flags will lie displayed: one will fall .at each successive minuto. The final flag ; and gunfire is the signal to start. [ In the general handicap race handicaps I will be made to-day, and will be given at i tho start. The competitors numbers will be. displayed ono minute before the start of the race. Members of the association and all those I who have received invitations are recnicsteJ to apply for admission at, the officials' enclosure at the <nd of the King's Wharf. Tho rest of the wharf is open to tho general public. In the event of bad easterly weather tho programme will be altered, and all events I oxcept speed classes will be run early. A ferry boat will be available to take all interested beyond Kauri Point, where speed events will then take place. All visiting yachts and launches are requested to keep off the course. To show the interest taken in this event, launches are coming in from different places on the coast, one with a party from Pacroa. The programme for to-day's racing is as follows: —
