THE OPENING DAY.

WAXGANUI WINS MARCHING.

[by telegraph press association J Christ-church, Sunday. The band contest under the auspices of the South Island Band Association began yesterday morning. The following are the results of the morning events — K Flat Cornet Solo: R. Wills, Invercargill Hibernian, 96 points, 1; P. Dunn, Wanganui Garrison, 87, F. Turner, Oamaru Regimental, 84, 6. Also competed: W. Taylor, Timaru Regimental; F. Chapman, Timaru Regimental; L. Neighbours, Westport Garrison ; G. Woods, Kaponga. Flugei Horn Solo: J. Trussell, Wanganui Garrison, 88 points, 1; R. G. Ward, Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry, 87, 2; D. Boyer. Lyttelton Marine, 85, 3. Also competed : 'B. C. Johansen, Nelson Regimental R. G. Allen and John Lee, Timaru Regimental Milroy, Westport Garrison; W. Thomas, Oamaru Regimental. In the afternoon, on the Addington Showgrounds, the marching competition took place in the presence of a large convd. Sixteen bands entered, but only twelve competed. The military judges were Captain McGee, Lieutenant W. Hoar, and Sergeant-Majors Franks and Shuttleworth. The timekeeper was Major Jones, and tho judge of instruments Mr. J. McCullough. The results were as follows : — Wanganui, 272J points, 1; Invercargill Hibernian, 269, 2: Timaru. 267, 3; Westport Garrison, 2645, 4.
