UNIVERSITY CHAMPIONSHIPS. FIRST DAY'S PLAY. The fourteenth annual New Zealand Ulll- - tournament was opened on Saturday, vhen tho lawn tennis championships were :ommenced at the Remuera Lawn _ lennis Club's courts. The recent heavy rains pro■ented matches from being played in tue norning. When a start was made in the ifternoon the courts wo/o sodden and heavy. Only doubles matches were played, so hat it will be necessary for many games o bo decided to-day in order that tho finals nay bo completed to-morrow. . In Saturday's play Canterbury University College, the present holders of the Challenge Cup, did not lose a match. The results wore as follows:— MEN'S DOUBLES. First Round: G. E. H. Gotz and A. K. The weather was fina but cold with a strong south-west wind lor the opening day cf tho Rotorua lawn tennis tournament. The courts were very heavy after the rain of Friday. A largo number o: spectators watched the play. Tho first rounds of all matches were completed and good progress was made with the second rounds. The Otago Lawn Tennis Association's annual Easter tourney was continued yesterday. The high wind of the previous day again interfered with play to a considerable extent and a shower of rain about 4.30 p.m. slopped all matches for the day.
