GERMAN SUBMARINES CLAIM MORE VICTIMS.
THREE STEAMERS SUNK OFF SCILLY ISLANDS. RAIDER UNDER FIRE OF FRENCH CRUISER. (Received April 2, 7.30 - i.) London, April 1. Three more merchantmen have been sunk by German submarines. The French steamer Emma was torpedoed off Beachy Head. No warning was given to the crew, seventeen of whom are missing. The U2B torpedoed the steamer Flaminian, from Glasgow to Capetown, off the Scilly Islands on Tuesday. The crew landed safely. Ten shots from a quickfirer were fired at the Flaminian, which was eventually torpedoed, the crew having barely time to take to the boats. The steamer Crown of Castile was also sunk off the Scillies. The crew were rescued. Submarine U2B chased the Crown of Castile for an hour, and eventually sunk her by shell-fire. Shells were deliberately aimed at the bridge, but missed their mark. A submarine off the Scilly Islands chased the City of Cambridge for an hour and a-half. Shells damaged the Cambridge's deck, but the vessel escaped. It is officially stated that a French light cruiser chased a submarine at Dieppe, and fired a number of shots at her periscope. She then passed above the submarine, and subsequently oil rose to the surface. A German seaplane dropped bombs on the Dutch trawler Hibernia, in the North Sea, but without doing any harm. Later a torpedo-boat stopped and searched the Hibernia, which was allowed to proceed. The Flaminian, which was only built last year, was a steamer of 3500 tons, owned by the Ellerman Lines, Limited. The Crown of Castile was a steamer of 4505 tons, built in 1905, and owned by the Crown Steamship Company, of Glasgow. There are two French ships of the name of Emma, one of 1617 tons and a trawler of 252 tons.
