EASTER IN THE CHURCHES.
SPECIAL SERVICES. The usual Good Friday services were held in the Anglican churches yesterday. At St. Mary's Cathedral the three-hours devotion—from noon until 3 p.m.— conducted by the warden of St. John's College, the Rev. P. T. Williams. A similar service at All Saints' Church was conducted by the Bishop of Auckland, Dr. A. W. Averill. Morning and evening services were held at St. Matthew's Church, and at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. A recital of Passion music was given at St. Matthew's Church in the evening. The members of St. Paul's choir gave Stainer's cantata, "The Crucifixion." Dr. Averill delivered the final of a series of addresses at St. .Mary's Cathedral. Holy Week services have been carried out at St. Patrick's Cathedral, commencing on Wednesday evening with the office of Tenebrae, Bishop Geary presiding on each occasion. On Holy Thursday morning Pontifical High Mass was celebrated by the bishop. Good Friday services consisted of the .Mass of the Pre-Sanctified and Tenebrae in the evening. The Rt. Rev. Mgr. Brodie, V.G., preached the Passion sermon.
