ONEHUNGA

The Deputy-Mayor. Mr. J. Stoupe. presided at the" meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council last night. There were also present : Messrs. W. Colledge, E. Higgins, G. L. Taylor. E- Sutherland, J. B- Morton, T. H.Pardington, I. Loma?, and C- C. Davis.

A petition, bearing 367 signatures, was received asking the council to erect a batliing shed for ladies, with more room and conveniences than the one already in existence. The petitioners stated that, whereas only a few people used to go bathing on the Onehunga beach two or three years ago, now 200 or more in the water at once is a common sight. All the signatures were obtained from ladies while bathing on the beach. The petitioners further requested the council to forbid horseowners to swim their horses when and where the ladies bathe. The council decided to erect a new shed, and to refer the complaint in regard to swimming horses to the harbourmaster.

A numerously-signed petition was presented by Mr." Colledge, asking for the formation of Grey Street West, from Queen Street to the Park, and Selwyn Street from Grey Street to Trafalgar Street. The borough engineer, Mr HMetcalfe, wrote .■stating that the estimated eo.-.t of cutting down Grey Street alone, from Quern to Quadrant Road, was £1600. the petition was ordered to lie on the table for a fortnight. The council is seeking a block of land suitable for a public cemetery adjacent to the borough. With this end in view it asked the Mangere Road Board to consent to a blow of 25 acres near the Mangero Cemetery being devoted to that purpose. Permission was granted to the 3rd. Auckland, Mounted Rifles to camp on the Recreation Reserve from April 10 next to May 1. Reporting on the work of renovating the footpaths in the borough, Mr. C. C. Davis stated that, 8053 square yards of footpaths had been tarred and sanded this summer at the very cheap rate of l|d petsquare yard. This included all material and labour. A new tennis curt has been laid ] down at the back of the Public Library. ; Mr. E. Higgins asked when the court would be opened and under what conditions. He understood that the ratepayers had found the money through a library rate. Would the court, he asked, be open to the public or only to private players. In reply, to Mr. Higgins. Mr. Taylor stated that he was a member of the Library Committee, and with the Mayor, Mr. J. Rowe, had been appointed to draw up rules, etc. The tennis court would be open to the public, and the annual subscription had been fixed at 10s for gentlemen and 7s 5d for ladies. The Deputy-Mayor gave notice to move at the next "meeting : "That the Water Committee, be asked to report on the cost of supplying water meters to all consumers of water within the borough ; also, the advisability of altering the present minimum charges to meter owners and the minimum quantity.—-
