CAMPAIGN IN THE WEST.
FIERCE GERMAN ATTACKS-
REPULSED BY FRENCH.
BATTERY DESTROYED
Wellington, January 17.
The Prime Minister has received the following cable from the High Commissioner's office, dated London, January 16: Paris reports state that at Notre Dame de Lorette, near Carency, the enemy has reoccupied a portion of the trenches they lost on Thursday. At Blagny, near Arras, our progress was continued. An energetic attack by the enemy, following upon a violent bombardment at La Boiselle, was repulsed.
In the region of Soissons the allies' artillery dispersed an assembling regiment, blowing up a German battery and demolishing a breastwork. A stubborn attack on the allies' trenches at Flirey, west of Pont a Mousson, completely failed. The Germans were forced to evacuate a crest east of Pont a Mousson.
