ALARMS IN WELLINGTON.
TWO BUILDINGS DAMAGED.
[BY TELEGRAPH. PRESS ASSOCIATION'.]
Wellington, Sunday. Two fires occurred in the cify at an early hour this morning. The first was at 2.26 a.m., when the brigade received a call to a two-storeyed building in Upper Willis Street, occupied by James Hopwell, the owner, who had the lower floor, and F. P. Smith, who carried on a photographer's business on the upper floor. The fire originated upstairs and did considerable damage before it could be extinguished, the studio being practically burnt out. Smith had an insurance policy for £190 in the Phoenix Office.
At 5.30 a.m. a milkman named Parker discovered a fire in a two-storeyed dwelling in Sydney Street, and by his prompt action in rousing the inmates probably prevented fatal results. The house was occupied by Mrs. Mary Carr and the outbreak occurred hi a bedroom in which two young men, Patrick Soutarand Conrad Armstrong, were sleeping. The fire had a strong hold when it was discovered, and it was not before the building was seriously damaged that the brigade could check it. The contents of four bedrooms, valued at about £100, were destroyed and the building suffered damage to the extent of approximately £100. The whole of the furniture in the lower part was eared but was affected very much by water.
