A surgeon on the warship Brilliant, says: ''One cannot have any conception of what a modern naval bombardment is like, unless one has been through it. There is the deafening roar of the big guns which shakes the ship- the irritating smell of explosives, and enemy's shells whistling overhead, while wef have to contend with submarines m the sea / around and aeroplanes hovering overhead.
