THE PATRIOTIC FUND.

In order to assist the Belgian Fund it has been decided to temporarily close all the Auckland Patriotic Funds at the end of this month. The urgent plea for help to the homeless Belgians must appeal to all, and it is desirable that for a time the patriotism and generosity

of the people should be devoted to this single purpose The final appeals for the Patriotic Fund arc, therefore, being made to-day and tomorrow.' Tho Auckland Citizens' Fund has reached over £50,000, of which £9800 has been contributed through the Herald Fund. By

comparison with other cities, Auckland has given generously, but she has not given in proportion to the future peril from which she is being saved by the war now being fought in Belgium and France, nor can it be said that the Aucklanders who are peacefully and profitably follow-

ing their occupations have given in proportion to those who have volunteered for service. The sum now at the credit of the fund would be largely increased if in the remaining two days every Aucklander who has not yet subscribed would make, a point of contributing. Few of them are so poor as to escape the personal appeal which such a fund, at such a time, makes to every British citizen worthy of the name. The Patriotic League is anxious to close the fund as early in November as possible, but it will remain open for sufficient time to allow of the receipt of contributions posted tomorrow.
