GERMAN STEAMER CHASED.

SHELTER IN NEUTRAL PORT.

Narrowly escaping capture and with two ragged holes in her stern as a memento of a thrilling chase, the N.D.L. steamer Princess Alice ploughed her way into Zambnansa. in the Philippines, at three o'clock one morning late in August. That the Princess Alice met with a narrow escape from capture and was hit by at leapt two shots, it is said, is positively known in Manila. About 2 a.m. on Au£P'°t 24 the U.S.S. Monterey, while in Manila Vn.y, receiver a wireless '' 5.0.5." message from the Princess Alice. Not knowing her exact position, and fearing that she was in great danger, the Monterey was on the point of putting to sea to her assistance when a message was received from Zamhoanga stating that the German liner had arrived there. It is not known what vessel chased the Princess Alice and put an end to her scouting cruises, which had caused such a profound sensation daring the preceding 12 days. One report stated that the British ship was a revenue cutter from North Borneo. She discovered the big liner outsido the three-milo neutral zone and evidently gave chase. The big liner proved the speedier, and before the British vessel could disable her the liner was ! inside the protecting lines of the Philip- ' pines. j" It has been stated that the wireless : apparatus on the Princess Alice will bo ; sealed, and she will not be allowed to ; transmit messages. Whether she will be ! interned at Zamboanga or brought to Manila was not known. .; That the Princess Alice never headed i for Shanghai, the port she cleared for, is positively known. It is quite positive that the authorities will forbid the German vessel again to leave a Philippine port in scouting duty, and then, to seek shelter there from an enemy.
