RUMOURS OF SEVERE GERMAN DEFEAT IN BELGIUM

GENERAL STAFF SAID TO HAVE QUITTED GHENT. PREPARATIONS FOR A HASTY RETREAT FROM OSTEND. Amsterdam, October 23. The German General Staff has quitted Ghent. Strong rumours are current of a severe German defeat. It is stated that the allies have driven the Germans into entanglements and dykes, where the cavalry is unable to manoeuvre, and the- big guns have become bogged. It is further reported that the German lines have been cut south of Ostend. The public buildings in Ostend are full of wounded. The Germans arc now entrenched at Zeebruggc, on the north-west coast, between Heyst and Blankenberghc. The correspondent of the Daily News at Rotterdam states that there are very few Germans in Ostend or at places recently captured in Flanders, as the enemy is throwing all his available forces between Nicuport and Ypres, in the south-west of Belgium. The latest reinforcements brought up many cannon. Over a hundred Belgian railway engines in Ostend and other places are believed to be ready for a hasty retreat.
