TAKING PRECAUTIONS
ARREST OF FOREIGNERS. CHARGE OF ESPIONAGE. London, October 23. Several thousands of Germans and Austrian* were arrested in the United Kingdom yesterday, includ- | ing over a thousand who were taken in London. A German, who had charge of the telephone switchboard at Rosyth naval dockyard, has been arrested on a charge of espionage. FRUITLESS SEARCH. VISIT TO SUSPECTED HOUSES. Sydney, October 24. Prompted to fake action by the Imperial authorities, the Defence Department searched various establishments suspected of containing enemy material. Nothing was discovered except, a quantity of correspondence, which is being closely scrutinised.
