OBITUARY.

I MAJOR F. NELSON GEORGE. News of the death of Major P. Nelson George, formerly of Auckland, but who, of late years, had resided in England, was received on Saturday. Major George was one of the committee appointed at the. time of the crisis in the affairs of tho Bank of New Zealand, and also sat upon the Assets Board. He owned the Wapiti Estate, Epsom, where he kept several racehorses. His most famous animal was an Australian-bred colt named Nelson, with which he won the Auckland Cup on three successive occasions. Another noteworthy horse carrying Major George's colours was of which he was the breeder, and with which he won a series of important events, including the New Zealand Cup, the Canterbury Jockey Club's Derby, and the Fame club's cup. About 12 years ago he broke up his stud and, accompanied by Mrs. George, left for England, where he had lived until the time of his death. Mr. Terence O'Brien, formerly an inspector of police, died this morning at- the age of 64 years. He arrived in New Zealand in 1869 and joined the police force * in 1874, being promoted to the rank of sergeant three years later, and, after two years in that capacity, to the rank of detective. Mr. O'Brien" served as subinspector in Christchurch, then as inspector in Napier, and finally as inspector m Dnnedin. He retired at the end of Janu- -. ary, 1911. Mr. O'Brien leaves a widow and two sons and four daughters.
