SEVERITY OF THE FIGHTING IN DIXMUNDE DISTRICT.
GERMANS ABANDON MANY DEAD AND WOUNDED. FRENCH COLONIALS' SUCCESS NEAR RHEIMS. London, October 22. Witnesses of the fighting in Dixmunde, south-east of Nieuport, state that the Germans, in withdrawing, suffered heavily from the bayonet. They abandoned thousands of dead and wounded. The allies' casualties were also serious. Many of the injured remained at the spot where they fell for 15 hours, owing to the darkness. Upwards of 50 succumbed to their injuries. Germans prepared long rows of miners' houses eastward of Lens, 10 miles north-east of Arras, for street fighting. The windows were protected by mattresses and the walls loopholed.
During the bombardment of Arras 200 civilians were killed.
It is reported that French colonial troops dislodged the Germans from the forts north and east of Rheims.
