POCKET-BOOK STOLEN.

SIX MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT

Accused in the Police Court yesterday of stealing a pocket-book and cheque, valued at £8 4s 9d, the property of George Herman Tarr, at Wellington, on September 22, William Francis Wilkinson pleaded guilty and said that his action was due to tlie effects of liquor. Chief-Detective McMahon said that the circumstances were that the accused was in the Wellington Post Office on September 22, and while there saw a man leave a pocket-book on the counter. Accused picked up the book, and taking a cheque from it cashed it at a bank. When approached by the police he made a full confession. Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., who occupied the Bench, sentenced Wilkinson to six months' imprisonment with hard labour. A DANGEROUS DOG. A young lady named Georgina Helen Rutherford pleaded not guilty to a charge of being the owner of a dog that attacked Garf Kainer in. Queen's Avenue. Four witnesses for the prosecution said that on September 20 Miss Rutherford's dog attacked Garf Rainer, a little boy, aged about 7 years. It bit him on the head and inflicted a bad wound. Mr. Moody claimed that the dog possessed "an exemplary character, but that on this occasion the boy annoyed it and it pawed him. The magistrate, however, held that the dog was a dangerous animal, and recorded a conviction. He fined the defendant 10s, with £1 Os 6d costs, NOT ENTITLED TO UNIFORM. After Frederick Windsor had pleaded guilty to unlawfully wearing a military uniform, Chief-Detective McMahon explained that accused had been caught in Queen Street wearing the uniform 6f a territorial. The uniform did not belong to him, and he had no right to wear it. Accused was partly under the influence of liquor. The object of the prosecution was to warn people that territorial uniforms were not to be worn by civilians. The maximum penalty of £2 was imposed. SELLING LIQUOR WITHOUT j LICENSE. For selling whisky to Constable Potter at the Nelson Wharf on October 18 Andrew Frewen was fined £5. From the evidence tendered it was proved that the accused had mistaken the constable for a seaman. Before Mr. Cutten arrived at his decision Sub-inspector Johnston said that this class of offence was becoming too frequent. INTEMPERANCE. Fines of ss, in default 24 hours' imprisonment were imposed in the cases of three first offenders, who pleaded guilty to charges of drunkenness. On similar charges two other first offenders were convicted and discharged, a prohibition order being issued against one of them. Arthur Scott pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness, his fifth offence within the past six months. He also admitted breaking his prohibition order. For these offences he was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment, MISCELLANEOUS. The police applied for a remand in the case of Thomas Young, who was charged with indecently assaulting Elizabeth Hodgson on October 8. Accused was accordingly remanded Wednesday next., bail being allowed m one surety of £200. Two charges of theft were preferred against Rudolf Christiansen, to both of which he pleaded guilty. The first charge related to a suit of clothes, valued at £3 10s, and the second to an auto-harp, valued at £2. Accused was ordered nine months'

imprisonment. in the Juvenile Court a lad, aged 16, pleaded guilty to maiming five young bulls, valued at £15, the property of Kollv Bros. He was committed to the Supremo Court for sentence. Four strokes of the birch were ordered for a Technical College student who was convicted of stealing an iron pattern, valued at ss, from the college. It was stated during the hearing that petty thefts of this description were becoming too common at the college. ' L ~'
