BATTLE IN POLAND ROLLS BACK TO THE WEST.
PRISONERS AND WOUNDED POUR INTO WARSAWAUSTRIANS HELD IN CHECK IN GALICIA. Petrograd, October 21. The Battle has rolled back from Warsaw towards the west, and the cannonading is now inaudible. A constant stream of prisoners and wounded is pouring into the city. The battle progressed in ceaseless rain. Ghastly details of th« fighting have reached Warsaw, where crowds manned the bridges to watch the corpses of the enemy floating down the river. The Austrians made strenuous efforts to cross the river San between Jaroslaw and Przemysl, but were repulsed. They then endeavoured to outflank the Russians south of Przemysl, but several days' obstinate fighting favoured the Russians.
