PORTUGAL TO SEND 90,000 MEN TO ALLIES' AID.
PREPARATIONS FOR WAR PROCEEDING ACTIVELY.
SLIGHT INSURRECTION OF MAFIA CRUSHED. Lisbon, October 21. The newspapers Seculo and Republica state that Portugal is sending 8000 artillerymen to France, under General Jaime de Castro, and also 4000 marines. The Seculo states that when preparations are complete, Portugal will send 90,000 to the front. With a view to preventing the Portuguese Government assisting Britain Royalists have circularised the barracks, urging troops not to obey the Government. A slight insurrection of the Mafia at Braganza was crushed. Preparations for war arc proceeding actively. Later reports from Lisbon state that the revolutionary movement is chiefly of a military character. Several bombs were thrown, which caused considerable damage. The Portuguese Legation in' London asserts that the situation is well under control.
