OBITUARY.

MR. W. S. COCHRANE. WORKER FOR ANGLICAN CHURCH. The death occurred yesterday of Mr. William Stephen Cochrane, who has been for very many years actively associated with the affairs of the Anglican Church in the Auckland diocese. During over 36 years he occupied the position of secretary to the diocese, resigning the office only a few months ago. Latterly his health had failed, and Mr. Cochrane died yesterday at the age of 69 years. Born in Jersey, Mr. Cochrane was a son of the late Mr. Samuel Cochrane, whose name is still preserved by one of the leading auctioneering firms of the city. He came to New Zealand as a bov of 14, and subsequently entered his father's business. Upon his appointment as diocesan secretary, Mr. Cochrane practically retired from active association with the. business, resigning its conduct to Mr. James Dacre. The only break in the long period of 55 years' residence in Nesr Zealand was made last year, when Mr. Cochrane left upon a holiday visit to England. After an absence of about 12 months he returned to Auckland, but had already forwarded his resignation of the diocesan office.

As one of the trustees of St. Matthew's stone church fund, during more than 30 years Mr. Cochrane devoted his business ability with notable success to the accumulation of the fund. His services were also given to the Church as a warden of St. Mark's, Remuera, as a representative of that parish in the Auckland Synod, and as a member at various times of the General Synod of New Zealand. He was one of the founders of the Diocesan Girls' Hiifh School, and he acted as general secretary of the Melanesian Mission until his departure for England. Similar activity was displayed by Mr. Cochrane in secular matters. His advocacy was largely instrumental in the adoption of the scheme by which the Manukau Water Supply Board was originated, and he was the first chairman of the board. In his earlier years Mr. Cochrane was a member of the Epsom Road Board, and during the past 30 years he has been a trustee of the Auckland Savings Bank. Although his time was shared by so many interests Mr. Cochrane took an active part in athletics. Formerly captain of the Auckland Golf Club, he was a life member of that body, and was also a member of the Remuera Bowling Club. He leaves three daughters—Mr.«. G. O'Halloran, Mrs. A. _ E. Sloman, and Miss Cochrane. The interment will be made privately at St. Mark's Church, Remuera.
