Captain J. B. Rainey, of Napier, arrived in Auckland by tho Main Trunk express last night. Mr. M. P. Murray, of Christchurch, is at present on a visit to Auckland, and is staying at tho Star Hotel. Mr. H. W. Wilson, town clerk, loft for Wellington by last evening's express train. He will return probably on Sunday.

The Chief Justice, Sir Robert Stout, left for Wellington by the mid-day express yesterday to attend tho sitting of the Appeal Court.

Mr. W. J. D. Milne, of Oamaru, and Mr. Georgo Wilson, of Wellington, who have been in Auckland as members of tho commission set up under the Regulation of Trade and Commerce Act, kit for ltotorua yesterday morning. *.

Mr. W. Wallace, Mayor of Birkenhead, left for Wellington by tho noon express yesterday for the purposo of giving evidence before the Committee of tho House of Representatives in opposition to the Auckland Harbour Board Vesting Bill, which is now under the consideration of Parliament.

Mr. James R. Boose, secretary of tha Royal Colonial Institute, left by List evening's express train to make a tour of the Southern towns in the interests of the society. Ho will return to Auckland about October 22. and will cross to Sydney by tho next steamer, afterwards visiting Tasmania.

Dr. Cyril J. A. Griffin, son of the Rev. C. Griffin, of Dominion Road, was one of the first New Zealand era to go to the front. He joined the Ist Cavalry Field Ambulance, with the rank of lieutenants After graduating in arts and scienco at the Auckland University Collbge, Lieutenant Griffin went to London seven years ago to study medicine.

Tho death is announced from Morrinsville of Mr. H. R. C. Francis, president! of the Morrinsville Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Town Board. Mr. Francis was bora in Croydon, England,, and came to New Zealand with his parents as a child. He was educated at! the Boys' High School, Christchurch, and subsequently entered tho office of his father, a solicitor in that city. About three years ago he went to Morrinsville to manage the legal business of Messrs. Gillies and Gilfillan, and lit took a keen interest in all matters connected with tho advancement and welfare of the district.
