SMOKING IN A MINE.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN ronUESPOXDEXT. ] Httntly, Wednesday. A thither employed in the Extended mine appeared before Mr. E. Rawson, S.M., this morning charged with having taken matches and smoking material into a mine in which the use of safety lamps exclusively had been ordered. Defended by Mr. E. H. Xorthcroft, the defendant pleaded guilty. He said that his act was involuntary, but as soon as he remembered tho cause of the recent catastrophe he extinguished his cigarette.
The magistrate said.that such careless practices must be severely discouraged. He would take into consideration the fact that defendant had lost his employment in consequence of his breach of the regulations, but he would deal severely with these cases in the future. Defendant was finijd £3 and costs 7s.
