ADVANCE ORDERED TO RELIEVE PRESSURE IN WEST

CREDIT TAKEN FOR THE ALLIES' ADVANCE.

London - , September IG.

The Morning Post's Petrograd correspondent states that General Rennenkampf, officer commanding the Russians in East Prussia, ordered an advance into Prussia regardless of losses in order to rolieve the pressure in the west. Now that tho rapid diversion of the German i roups had prevented disaster to the French armies, it would not ho surprising if Russia evacuated East Prussia, and prosecuted a more advantageous plan elsewhere.

Colonel Shumsky, in an article in tho Bourse Gazette, says: — "Viewing the general situation in all the theatres of war, it is fair to mncluue that our successes on the Austrian frontier, and also the movement in East Prussia, are the primary causes of the victories of the Anglo-French. Tho turning point of the. great battle of millions was when Russia hurled on the Austrian front every available man, hit checking the enemy and then assuming the offensive."

Russians crossing the San, immediately behind tho retreating Austnans, avoided the upper and shallower reaches guarded by tho fortresses of Jaroslav and Przercysl, costing many millions, and are thus installed in the Riverine triangle, amidst a considerable quantity of Austrian stores. The Austrians were greatly flustered. They did not expect the passago of the Russians to a district where they hoped to rest after a series of cruel defeats.

Tho Ran River is in Austria. It rises in the Steiner Alps, and enteTs the Ba\ i> liter a course "f between 55 and 60 miles. .hiroslan is a t-cwu in Galicia, on the San River, to the west of Leraberg. Przemysl is a uiwn in Galicia, Austria, 60 miles west of Lemberg. It is situated on tho River San, and is one of the strongest fortresses in Galicia.
