THEFTS AT TAUMARUNUI.
THREE MEN SENTENCED.
PURSUED THROUGH THE BUSH.

TAr/MAHrxn, Thursday. For some time past settlers in the Taumarunui and Taringamatu districts have missed various articles. Suspicion attached to three men named J. E. Conrad, A. Conrad and T. Thompson. The police followed them up into the wild country iB the Tuhua Ranges, east of the railway line, and discovered their camp, The men, however, escaped into the bush. After many days' search, during which, the police went on foot, carrying swags, the men were found and arrested. They confessed to the thefts, and assisted in restoring the property. It was found they had organised a complete system, having depots of horse feed at various points between Taumanmui and their camp. They were charged to-day at Taumarunui before Messrs. Ryan and Gavin, J. P. 's, with theft. More serious charges of breaking and entering were withdrawn by the police. The accused all pleaded guilty and elected to he dealt with summarily. J. E. Conrad was charged with only one theft. The Bench decided to sentence A. Conrad and T. Thompson to fix months on each of the three principal charges, the sentences to be cumulative. J. E. Conrad was sentenced to sis months' imprisonment.
