KAURI GUM INDUSTRY.
LAST YEAR'S EXPORTS. . A CONSIDERABLE INCREASE. [BY TELEGRAPH—SPECIAL COBRESPOXpEST] Wellington, Thursday. The annual Statement of the Minister for Mines contains the following in regard to kauri gum:—''The most satisfactory feature in connection with our mineral exports during 1913 is the considerable increase in the quantity and value of kauri gum exported, which amounted to 8780 tons, valued at £549,106. These results are the highest, both in tonnage and value, during the past seven years. The total production for the year actually amounted to 9595 tons, being the highest during 10 years. The reason for the improved conditions in this old and settled industry is that there is now a steady sale for inferior grades of gum known in the trade as "dust" and "chips," hitherto in little demand, but which are now shipped to Germany for linoleum manufacture.
