ARRIVAL IN AUCKLAND.

Among the arrivals by the steamer Riverina yesterday from Sydney was Air. Joseph I. Brittain, who has been appointed Con-Bul-General for the United States for New Zealand.
Mr. Brittain has had a fairly lengthy experience in consular work. He informed a Herald representative last evening that ho was first appointed a consul in 1397 by President McKinloy and Field that position in Nantes, in Franco, Kohl, Prague and Ooburg, in Germany, and Bohemia, in Austria. Ho was at Coburg when he received his present appointment. Ho cornea from a Welsh family which went to the United States in 1630 and during the American War of Independence three brothers fought on the side of the Crown and two for America. At tho conclusion of tho war the former went to Canada
In regard to the commercial relations existing between America and Now Zealand, Mr. Brittain said that ho intended to do everything in his power to promote trade between these, countries. Now Zealand butter met with a good demand in America at tho present time and one of the largo hotels in San Francisco used nothing else. New Zealand was very well known in America and great interest was manifested in its progress. lie was eure that litre was a very bright future for trade between the two countries.
