MINING NEWS.

THAMES DEEP LEVELS,

[BY TELEGEATH.—OWN COKitESPONDENT.]

Thames, Saturday. Operations at the 1000 ft level in the crosscut northward aro still in suspension pending the result of the attempt to 10duce the pressure of Water and gas issuing, from tho face. The valve on the casing of the borehole in tho face of the mam crosscut has been left fully open during tho whole of tho week, and a strong flow of water and gas lias been coming from it, tho quantity of water constantly running being equal to about a sluice head, The effect on tho pressure so far litis not been much but there is a gradual though slow decrease, tho result for tho week being from 1301b to 1241b. It is intended to still continue this course in the hope that the pressure will go down after tho water has been running for a longer time. So far as can be seen at present, this is all that can be done, as unless the pressure can be reduced it would not bo safe to resume operations in the face of tho deviation crosscut towards tho Kuranui-Caledonian ground, a3 tho heavy pressure might cause the water to buret through again at uuy time, more especially as the course of tho crosscut is leading it towards the main slid' , and the resistance would become gradually less as the work proceeded. The distance yet to drivo to reach the Kuranui-Caledonian ground is about 30ft and to complete the work to a point opposite that company's main shaft would require a further 130 ft. MAY QUEEN. [nr TELEGRAPH.mra corkespon-dekt.] Thames, Saturday Tho work of sinking the. winze below tho 1000 ft levol on the Exchange reef in the May Queen mine is being continued the winze being now down about 10ft below the level. Tho quartz broken so far appears to be of much the same quality as was met with in tho drive, and shows good dabs of gold at each breaking down from the small branch, whilo the larger body is heavily mineralised. It is now intended to carry an underhand stopo along from the winze eastward to further test the lodo in that direction, MOANATAIARI.

[BY TELEGRAPH".— CORRESPCN'DEXT.]

Thames, Saturday. The crosscut at the No. 3 level through the main slide in the Moanataiari mine has been continued during the week, and the slide has now been passed through, the face being now in the solid footwall country eastward of it. A start is being made to drive southward in the footwall country and parallel with the slide in the hope of picking up the eastward continuation of the reef 3 in that locality, which wero worked westward of the slide and which wero cut oif by its intersection with them. WAIOTAHI. [by TELEGRAPH.— CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Saturday.
