RANFURLY SHIELD MATCH. CANTERBURY'S BAD LUCK. [BT TELJiOilAl'ir. — PRESS ASSOCIATION'.] New Plymouth, Thursday. Though putting up a bettor exposition of football. Canterbury, the challengers, failed to wrest the Ranfurly shield from Taranaki to-day. The match was played on a dry ground in sunny weather. Realising that the challengers were a force to be reckoned with the laranaki Union bad arranged for Roberts and Cain io motor through from Wellington on the arrival of tho Maunganui on Wednesday night, and they arrived just in time. The Canterbury men proved far 100 nimble for tho slower forwards of the home side, and after tho first, few exciting moments, when the yellows had charge, they governed the first spell, but only managed to notch one try by Hegarty, which was converted by Crawshaw. The second spell saw the defenders more aggressive, and keeping the Southerners mostly defending, though periodically the latter swept aLmost the length of the field Stohr place-kicked a fine goal from the field. Whittington scored a try in the corner after crashing through alongside the line, near tho closing stages, the preliminary to which involved clc or work by Brown, Column, Roberts, and Cameron. The final scores were: Taranaki, 6; Canterbury. 5.

AUSTRALIAN VISIT CANCELLED. A meeting of ' tho Management Committee. of the Auckland Rugby Football League wag held on. Wednesday evening. Mr. R. Benson, chairman, presided, and there were also present: Messrs. Pollock. Strong, Baker. Cummins. Tatton, McDonald, and Spinlcy. A cable messago, read at tho meeting, stated that owing to the war the suggested •tour of the Dominion by the Sydney club teams had been postponed until next year. It was decided not to send a junior team away this year, and that tho WanganuiAuckland match be postponed indefinitely. It. was decided to hold the goal-kicking competition for Mr. P. W. Roopc's medal oh September 12. Mr. Calthorpe was appointed referee for rfhe Wellington-Auckland match.
