BRILLIANT FRENCH VICTORY.
COUNTER-ATTACK SUCCEEDS
ENEMY IN RETREAT,
Paris, August U. Two French battalions were attacked by a considerably larger force of the 21st German Dragoons on Wednesday afternoon at Spincourt, on the River Othain, 18 miles north of Verdun. The.- French held their ground until they were forced to retreat. Reinforcements of infantry and artillery were brought up at night, and a counter-attack was then made with brilliant success. The Germans abandoned a full battery, three mitrailleuses, and several ammunition waggons, leaving many wounded.
Next day the French battery surprised the Dragoons and practically destroyed the regiment.
They took a thousand prisoners I wounded the day before, including nine officersA Gorman column in the region is now retreating. ■c
