REGISTRY IN THE STATES.
OPPOSITION TO THE BILL.

Strong opposition developed in the Senate during the discussion on the amendments made by the House of Representatives to the Bill intended to allow British and, other ships to register as American.
Senator J. H. Gallinger stated that foreign interests had long tried to break down the American coastwise restrictions. The present, he declared, would.be of greater aid to Great Britain than victory on a battlefield.
