CRUISERS FIGHT AT LONG RANGE IN NORTH ATLANTIC.
GERMAN IN FLIGHT WAYLAID BY M.S. BRISTOL.
SUPERIOR SPEED USED TO ESCAPE FROM BRITISH GUNS. Halifax (Nova Scotia), August 14. A long range duel took place between the British cruiser Bristol and tho German cruiser Karlsruhe on Thursday night-
H.M.S. Suffolk found the German warship while tho latter was coaling, aud gave chase, but having the advantage of superior speed, the Karlsruhe escaped.
The enemy's ship was, however, waylaid by the Bristol, and the two cruisers engaged in a duel at long range. A heavy sea was running and the Bristol was unable to inflict much damage on the German cruiser.
Finally the Karlsruhe again utilised her speed and sought safety in flight
The Bristol and the Karlsruhe are both light cruisers of about the samo size. The Bristol, which was laid down in 1009, has a displacement of 4800 tons, and the Karlsruhe, which was laid down in 1911, a displacement of 4900 tons. The Karlsruhe has a speed of 28 knots against the Bristol's 25 knots. The Bristol is armed with two 6in guns, ten 4in guns, and two submerged torpedo tubes. The Karlsruhe, carries twelve 4.lin guns and two submerged torpedo tubes. Tho Suffolk is an old cruiser of the Monmouth class, laid down in 1902. She has a displacement of 9800 tons and a speed .of 23 to 24 knots, and carries fourteen 6iu guns, twelve smaller guns, and two submerged torpedo , tubes.
